Brazilian Nickel advances sustainability and community relations in Piauí

Brazilian Nickel (BRN), a global company specializing in the sustainable production of nickel, has published its third Sustainability Report, bringing together the company’s main advances in 2025 across the environmental and social fronts of the Piauí Nickel Project (PNP). Among these initiatives, Brazilian Nickel operates its own nursery dedicated to growing native seedlings and a care facility for wildlife, while also strengthening relationships with the communities surrounding the project.

The company’s nursery grows native seedlings from seeds collected by its own team, as part of our biodiversity management program. The wildlife care facility, in turn, looks after animals in need of temporary care, ensuring they return safely to their natural habitat. These initiatives add to other environmental management practices adopted by the company throughout 2025, in line with the sector’s international sustainability standards.

As a reflection of this work, the company had its Nickel Mark award — one of the leading global recognitions of responsible nickel production, awarded to Brazilian Nickel’s pilot plant — recognized through 2027.

“Sustainability remains at the core of our business and guides the decisions we make as the project advances. Maintaining the Nickel Mark award and our continued alignment with International Finance Corporation (IFC) standards reflect our commitment to responsible mining and to international best practices. In 2025, we strengthened our environmental and social performance through initiatives focused on responsible land-use governance and transparent relationships with local communities,” says Mark Travers, CEO of Brazilian Nickel.

Social commitment: close to communities and people

Throughout 2025, Brazilian Nickel also intensified its dialogue with residents and leaders in the municipalities within the project’s area of influence in Piauí, carrying out 77 structured engagement activities. These include the ten Project Monitoring Committees (PMCs), which bring together the company’s team, community leaders and public officials on a quarterly basis to share information and discuss potential local impacts and opportunities.

Another highlight was the eight editions of the Women’s Discussion Circles, created to bring women’s perspectives into community engagement. The company also maintained its Door-to-Door Visit program, the Coffee with the Community gatherings and visits by communities and partners to the pilot plant, expanding transparency with the surrounding population.

“Our relationship with the communities of Piauí is not merely a communication channel: it is active, continuous listening that shapes real decisions about the project. The committees, the discussion circles and the visits to our operation exist so that, together, we can build a relationship of trust and transparency with the region,” says Luciana Gutmann, Corporate Affairs Director at Brazilian Nickel.

Brazilian Nickel’s social commitment extends to its employees. In 2025, the company earned Great Place to Work (GPTW) certification and expanded the Apoiar Program — which includes psychological support in cases of serious or rare illness (Ao Seu Lado, “By Your Side”), maternity support and bereavement support. UniBRN, the company’s corporate university, broadened team training, totaling almost 7,000 hours of training over the year.

This is Brazilian Nickel’s third annual Sustainability Report. It was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, aligned with the sustainability-related guidance of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and connected to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
